Calamine is a mixture of zinc oxide (ZnO) with about 0.5% iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3). It is the main ingredient in calamine lotion and is used as an antipruritic to treat sunburn, eczema, rashes, poison ivy, chickenpox, insect bites and stings. It is used as a mild antiseptic to prevent infections that can be caused by scratching the affected area. It is also used to dry weeping or oozing blisters and acne abscesses.
USES: This medication is used to
help relieve itching, pain and discomfort due to poison ivy, poison oak and
poison sumac.
HOW TO USE: Wash and completely dry the affected area before applying the
lotion. Shake lotion well before use. Apply this medication to the affected area
of skin, generally three to four times daily or as directed by your physician.
Learn proper use of this medication. Consult your pharmacist. This medicine is
for external use only. Notify your doctor if your condition does not improve in
7 days.
SIDE EFFECTS: Very unlikely but report promptly: rash, irritation. If you notice
other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Tell your doctor your medical history and of any allergies you
might have. Avoid getting this medicine in your eyes or on the inside of your
nose, mouth or genital area.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of all nonprescription and prescription
medication you may use, especially: other skin products. Do not start or stop
any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or
emergency room immediately. US residents can call the US national poison hotline
at 1-800-222-1222. Canadian residents should call their local poison control
center directly.
NOTES: Do not share this medication with others.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near
the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing
schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 to 30 degrees
C) away from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
